Yangon & Surrounds
Yangon is the busy bustling former capital of Myanmar. Today, with a
population of over 5 million people, it remains the largest city and
main economic hub of Myanmar. The city lies at the convergence of the
Yangon and Bago rivers and is estimated to be 2,500 years old. Downtown
Yangon is still mainly made up of decaying colonial buildings such as
the former High Court, the former Secretariat buildings and the Strand
Hotel. It continues to be a city of the past, as seen by its longyi-wearing
pedestrian, its street vendors, and its pungent smells.
Yangon is host to several major attractions including, the glittering
Shwedagon Pagoda, its colonial heart with the over 2000 year old Sule
Pagoda, Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining Buddha, as well as Kandawgyi Park, Inya
Lake, Scott Market (also known as Bogyoke Market) which is a heaven for
Myanmar handicrafts and the tranquil Taukkyan War Memorial.
During your stay at our Classique Inn, we are happy to arrange
excursions in the outskirts of Yangon.
Twante
Located on the other side of the Yangon River, Twante village has
very much retained its original character. We would go first to the
jetty and take a local ferry across the river. Once across, a one hour
drive by local taxi will take us to Twante. The road is extremely bumpy
and you should be prepared for an uncomfortable yet very interesting
ride, which provides a glimpse of life on and along the famous Twante
Canal. After a visit to Shwesandaw Pagoda we can take a trishaw to the
pottery area where a large part of the population is engulfed in the
production of pottery. Walking through the many workshops where locals
are busy molding pots, we will be able to observe this very traditional
craft. Drive back to Yangon by local taxi and ferry.
Bago
|It is located about 80 km from Yangon and has a population of about
220,000. It is the fourth largest city in Myanmar. The city's religious
monuments include many temples, of which the most impressive is the Shwe
Maw Daw Pagoda, and a great statue (almost 17 meters long) of a
Reclining Buddha in the Shwe Tha Lyaung Pagoda, believed to have been
built in 944. On the way of the journey, you can visit the famous Kha
Khat Wain Monastery during the monks’ lunch time as well as Bayintnaung
"Kabawza Thadi" palace.
Thanlyin
It was formerly known as Syriam (Myanmar usually pronounce as "Tanyin").
It is a city in Yangon Division in Myanmar. It is located on the bank of
Yangon River, and is a major port. We can visit Kyaik Khauk Pagoda and
Yeylel Pagoda or the Pagoda in the middle of an island in the river. The
ferry boats stand to go to the Yeylel Pagoda where you can also feed the
big fishes in the river. There is also the National Races village across
the river and you can visit on the way back
